The Pukes are a punk ukulele group based in London who play songs by the likes of Dead Kennedys, Exploited, Xray Spex, The Clash, etc like you never heard ‘em before – as well as original tunes.
The band formed in 2011 after meeting in an east London pub to sink a few pints and play punk songs on ukuleles. The pastime soon turned into demand and their massive stage presence and raucous live show has landed them numerous festival appearances and gigs across the UK, raising a glass and a smile wherever they go.
Around half the group were complete beginners before joining The Pukes, while others are members (or former members) of bands which include Infa Riot, Haywire, Lost Cherrees, Werecats, PMT and Rabies Babies. In 2013 they received funding from Arts Council England to run workshops at festivals, encouraging kids and adults alike to pick up the uke and have a go.
The band released their debut EP on Damaged Goods records in 2013 and their first album Too Drunk To Pluck (on their own label, Hoo Ha records) followed in 2014. In summer 2015 they headed to Spain and Germany for their first gigs outside the UK. In December 2015 they released a Christmas single called Exmas which helped raise money for London charity Rock’N’ Roll Rescue.
